Although sometimes portrayed this way, Topsham isn't a sleepy backwater for tourism and retirement. While the megastores are located in Exeter or out-of-town trading estates, Topsham has a variety of shops and businesses, both for staple necessities and specialist services for local and wider markets.

It's remarkable that such a small area hosts at least 100 businesses with an Internet presence. Some are high-tech cottage industries; others traditional firms that have realised the advantages of using the Web.
